Rare Gibson MK?53 “Mark Series” Acoustic Guitar – 1978 – Solid Spruce Top / Maple Back & Sides
Description / History
This 1978 Gibson MK-53 is a rare and innovative acoustic from Gibson’s experimental Mark Series, produced between 1975 and 1978. These guitars were the result of a collaboration between Gibson and Dr. Michael Kasha, a scientist focused on improving acoustic guitar design, along with luthier Richard Schneider.
The MK series was Gibson’s attempt to reinvent the flat-top acoustic using scientific principles. The result was a line of guitars with unconventional bracing, bridge placement, and internal architecture, all aimed at improving tone, sustain, and projection. While the line was not a commercial success at the time, it has since become a cult favorite among collectors and players who appreciate its bold design and warm, articulate sound.
Only about 1,400 MK-53s were produced, making this model one of the rarest and most desirable in the Mark Series. With its unique construction, solid tonewoods, and player-focused design, the MK-53 stands apart from traditional dreadnoughts in both look and tone.
